What does it mean to you; Australia day, being Australian? Some people don’t understand the history of aboriginal people and how the colonization of Australia, stolen generations and other things that have happened in-between still affect aboriginal people today. While the majority of Australians are taking advantage of the public holiday and just using it as an excuse to get drunk and act up as fools, some other australians, including the native Australians, and even people like myself, still see it as a day of mourning. I’m not speaking on behalf of anyone but myself, but I do know how alot of people feel towards this because I’ve been educated in such areas, unlike some narrow minded people who arent open to learning and understanding the cruel history of our country.

Just ask yourself one question, today, as you’re getting drunk and running a muck; what does Australia day really mean for you? You’re out there claiming to be proud to be australian, but personally for you, what does it all really mean?

Australia day for me, not only is a day of mourning. I use days like today to take time to reflect on people who lost their lives for us to live the way we do today. Deserving people who never had a chance. I take this time to appreciate everything good living in Australia had provided for me, being brought up in a safe environment with a good health care system, being in a country where we have the right to speak our minds without being prosecuted. There have been some harsh unnecessary stepping stones that have been walked across, but none the less, it has made this country a comfortable one to live in. Take others into consideration this australia day, as Australia day means something different to each person, it could be about hope, love, family, loss, or even a path way, but whatever it is, for that person, that’s what the whole day is about celebrating/mourning.

For me, Australia day is about freedom.
